Step 4 - English Language Proficiency, Standardized Tests and Other Certificates

English Language Certificates

An official English language proficiency certificate must be provided. The Cyprus Institute accepts IELTS (a least 6.5) or TOEFL (at least 79 on the iBT). If the applicant's native language is English or the applicant graduated from a university where English was the language of instruction, then this requirement may be waived.
Applicants may upload up to 4 English Language Certificates.

Step 5 - Statement of Intent

Your statement of intent should be 500-1000 words. The statement should convince the faculty on the selection committee that you have solid achievements that demonstrate potential for success in graduate study. Ideally, it should address the following:
1) Introduction: Introduce yourself, your interests and your motivations. This section should be brief and to the point (not an autobiography).
2) Summarize your undergraduate, and if applicable graduate career. a) Research conducted. Mention with whom, title of project, what you responsibilities were, and the outcome. Write technically, since professors will read your statement. b) Significant papers or thesis project you completed, as well as anything scholarly beyond your curricular requirements. c) Work experience, especially responsibilities related to your proposed field of graduate study to which you are applying.
3) Discuss relevance of your recent and current activities: If you graduated prior to applying to graduate school, write about what you have been doing and what you learned during this time. Explain how this experience helped you to focus on what you want to do during your graduate studies.
4) Elaborate on your academic interests: Indicate what you want to study in graduate school in enough detail to convince the faculty reviewing the application that you understand the scope of research in their discipline, and are engaged in current research themes. a) Indicate your area of interests. You may pose a question, define a problem, or specify a theme that you would like to address, and questions that arise from current research in the area. This should be addressed clearly and thoroughly. b) Look on the web at professors and their research. Look specifically for professors whose research interests are aligned with yours and indicate it. c) End the statement in a positive manner, demonstrating your excitement and readiness for the challenges ahead.

Step 6 - References

Applicants must provide at least two recommendations. Recommendations should be provided by professors, supervisors, employers or others able to comment on your educational goals and potential. Recommendations should specifically address your ability to succeed in your proposed academic program and discuss any experience that may have prepared you to succeed in the program. Your recommenders will be required to fill out an online recommendation form which will be requested automatically by entering their contact details through this system.
